The Essays of Montaigne – Selected for Men

The Essays of Michel de Montaigne – Selected for Men

On the essays selected for this edition, the reader will be able to find reflections on various philosophies, historical episodes and historical figures, like, for example: Cicero, Seneca, Alexander, Socrates, Heraclitus, etc.; as well as some of the author’s most unique, if obscure, essays, like: “Of a Saying of Caesar”, “Of the Battle of Dreux”, “Of Cato the Younger“, “Observation on a War according to Julius Caesar“, etc.

Of the three tomes of essays written by Montaigne — immortalizing his opinions and reflections on the most varied subjects — this edition contains some of the thinker’s most popular (e.g., “The Cannibals”, “To Study Philosophy is to Learn to Die“, etc.), as well as essays on the most relevant topics (e.g., “On Glory”, “On Anger”, “On Idleness”, “On Cowardice”, “On Solitude”, “On Roman Grandeur”, etc.), individually selected to be of particular interest and value to the masculine reader.

This edition also includes the various quotes that Montaigne referenced in his essays, both in the original latin and translated into english — verses of Virgil, Ovid, Lucan, etc.; some of which he personally carved into the bookcases and ceiling beams in his library.

In short, this collection assembles some of the most pertinent and interesting essays of Michel de Montaigne, one of the most important philosopher of the Renaissance; and, whose charming and anecdotal prose influenced many later philosophers and writers — like Voltaire, Pascal, Emerson and Nietzsche.
